Providence String Quartet: "Dvorak in America"
Presented by the Providence Athenaeum

The Czech composer Antonin Dvorak spent the years 1892-1895 as the director of the now forgotten National Conservatory of Music in New York City as well as trying to forge a musical identity for the "New World." The National Conservatory was an extremely progressive and influential institution whose values and curriculum still reverberate throughout American conservatories and on Westminster Street here in Providence.

We will take a quick tour of this amazing institution as well as visiting the town of Spillville, Iowa where Dvorak lived during the summer of 1893 and composed the "American" string quartet (opus 96) and string quintet (opus 97).

See Thursday, May 15 for the second event in this two-part series.

Providence String Quartet: "Transfigured Night"

Presented by the Providence Athenaeum

Loved by some, hated by many, Arnold Schoenberg remains one of the most polarizing forces in music because of his abandonment of conventional tonality and the establishment of serialism.

In 1899, before the any of this had occurred, the young Schoenberg, under the spell of the poet Richard Dehmel, wrote his romantic masterpiece Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) for string sextet. We will explore this perfect partnership of music and poetry.
