Brazilian theorist Paulo Freire's impact on the development of educational
practice, the history of “emancipatory pedagogy,” and the important
role that the arts can play in bringing about freedom from oppression.
This
event is funded in part by a grant from the Rhode Island Council
for the Humanities, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment
for the Humanities.

Theodore
Sizer, Professor Emeritus at Brown University and Visiting
Professor of Education at Harvard University, is the Founder and
Chair Emeritus of the Coalition of Essential Schools. Having worked
with hundreds of American high schools since the late 1970s, he
has written a number of books on the subject of redesigning public
schools, including Horace's Compromise: The Dilemma of the American
High School. He isformerly the director of the Annenberg Institute
for School Reform.
Deborah
Meier, Founder of the
Central Park East Schools, is currently Co-Principal of the Mission
Hill School, a pilot elementary school in Roxbury, MA. A recipient
of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, she is among the most acclaimed
leaders of the school reform movement, having spent more than three
decades working in public education as a teacher, principal, writer,
and advocate. She is the author of several books, including The
Power of Their Ideas.
