Providence String Quartet
Chamber music concert

Yiddishbbuk, Haydn's Quartet in D Major, Opus 20, No. 4,
Dvorak's Quartet in
A flat Major, Opus 105.
Osvaldo Golijov's Yiddishbbuk
was composed in 1992 and was inspired, in part, by the poems and
drawings of children interned in the Terezin ghetto. The title refers
to the cabalistic text of a collection of apocryphal psalms that
perished in the Holocaust. Based
on the few remaining vestiges of a collection of ancient apocryphal
psalms, Yiddishbbuk is the recreation of music that begins,
in the words of Franz Kafka, with "a broken song played on
a shattered cymbalon.”
