Grau: Fantasia con Guayaba Habanera
On Saturday, October 18 at 7 PM, Community MusicWorks will perform with violinist Johnny Gandelsman (of Brooklyn Rider and Silk Road Project), along with Venezuelan composer Gonzalo Grau and his nine-piece Guayaba Salsa Band for a genre-bending program. The concert will feature the New York premiere of Grau’s “Fantasia de Guayaba Habanera”. As a special treat, enjoy the Bach Chaconne performed by Johnny Gandelsman and additional works by Grau. The evening will be capped with salsa dancing, so bring your dancing shoes!
“Fantasia de Guayaba Habanera,” translated as “Dreaming of guava fruit from Havana” was commissioned by Community MusicWorks for a performance in Providence in 2013, and features traditional Latin rhythms and the electric virtuosic playing of Gandelsman. The project brings together all elements of the Community MusicWorks mission–music education and performance in the context of building community. Students perform alongside their teachers, Gandelsman and Grau and the community is invited to be fully engaged in the energy of the evening through dancing and singing.
Location: Cary Hall at the DiMenna Center, 450 W 37th Street, New York, NY
